Neil Gaimans Bücher sind immer ziemlich abgefahren. Aber vielleicht auch nur die, die ich gelesen habe. „Der Ozean am Ende der Straße“ war für mich wie das Fallen durch das Kaninchenloch und ich als Leser musste mich einer anderen Realität stellen. Die Lektüre empfand ich als unheimlich, weil der Erzähler keinen Namen hat und ein Ententeich, die Dimensionen eines Ozeans hat, den man gern auch mal in einem Wassereimer herumtragen kann. Ich mochte die Familie Hempstock sehr. Ein Matriarchat, dass sich seiner Männer entledigt hat, rätselhaft und offensichtlich so alt wie die Zeit selbst. Letties Mutter und Großmutter wissen offensichtlich mehr über die Welt die durch den Selbstmord eines Mienenarbeiters geöffnet wird. Ein uraltes Wissen weitergegeben von einer weisen Frau zur nächsten und im Gegensatz zu allen anderen haben sie dem Jungen geholfen. Ich bin ambivalent was die Story angeht. Einerseits mochte ich den Einfallsreichtum des Autors, auf der anderen Seite übte die dunkle Macht auf mich keine Anziehung aus, ja ich verstand ihre Intention nicht. Kurzum ich konnte einfach keine Verbindung zur Geschichte aufbauen, auch das angekündigte „Poetische Juwel“ mochte ich nicht entdecken. Möglicherweise entging es mir auch einfach oder Mr. Gaiman und ich sind literarisch nicht so kompatibel, wie ich es mir immer gewünscht habe. Ich hatte immer das Gefühl irgendetwas würde fehlen, als wären wichtige Bestandteile nicht vorhanden, die die Geschichte rund gemacht hätten. Ich habe es am Ende des Buches darauf geschoben, dass der Text ursprünglich als Kurzgeschichte gedacht war und dann zu einem Roman ausgeweitet wurde.Das Glanzstück der Poesie ist bei diesem Buch unbemerkt an mir vorbeigegangen. Ich habe großen Respekt für den Einfallsreichtum des Autors, aber bei diesem Werk war/bin ich mir unschlüssig ob ich es mag oder nicht.

Neil Gaiman hat hier ein Buch vorgelegt, das man nur schwerlich beschreiben kann. Die Handlung ist relativ langsam und irgendwie hat man auf weiten Strecken das Gefühl, dass nicht wirklich etwas passiert und dennoch ist die märchenhafte Erzählung fesselnd und schön zu lesen.Die magischen Kindheitserinnerungen die den Protagonisten bei der Rückkehr an den Ort seiner Kindheit überkommen laden ein zu träumen, auch wenn man sich bisweilen sehr dicht an der Grenze zu den Alpträumen bewegt, denn nicht alles an das er sich beim Besuch auf der Farm seiner Jugendfreundin erinnert ist fröhlich. Genau genommen sind sogar die meisten Dinge traurig oder erschreckend und dennoch gelingt es Gaiman durch seine Sprache dem ganzen einen märchenhaften anstrich zu verleihen.Und auch wenn einem das Buch am Ende viele Antworten schuldig bleibt, ist es ein durchaus erfüllendes Leseerlebnis.

Ich bin nicht wirklich gut in Bücher-Rezensionen, deswegen nur kurz und knapp:Dieses Buch lässt in die Welt des 7-Jährigen Protagonisten eintauchen, dessen Name uns immer verschwiegen bleibt.Ich finde, dass es kein Buch ist, in dem man unbedingt Erklärungen für die Geschehnisse suchen sollte.Sondern sollte man einfach mal in die fantasievolle, imaginäre Welt, die Neil Gaiman hier mit wenigen, aber wundervollen und fassenden Worten erschafft, eintreten und sich einfach mal auf etwas neues einlassen, denn es gibt keine Erklärung für alle dies. Die ganze Geschichte fühlt sich für mich auch mehr an wie ein Traum, als eine Erinnerung.Der Titel ist passend gewählt und erklärt sich auch im Laufe des Buches.Also Kauf-Empfehlung!

This book defies categories and therefore it's a bit hard to tell you straight away what it is you'll read. It starts out as the story of some guy who comes back to the place he lived as a boy. The reader never gets his name (a fact I only got aware of now that I was thinking about it), but that doesn't mean at all that there isn't a connection to the protagonist. The whole story is told from this guy's 1st person POV and it's rather intense. Especially when the narrator starts remembering his past and realizes that firstly something is not right with his memories and that secondly there was some uncanny occurrence in his childhood he had totally forgotten about.And an adventure he has experienced, oh boy! And with each bit the narrator remembers, the story more and more becomes the story of three remarkable otherworldly women (actually there are two women and a girl) and how they kind of saved the whole world - and the narrator, back then when he was a boy. One can't really tell much more about the plot without spoiling it.This story develops slowly without dragging or having any issues with the pacing. No, this is done just right here. And I liked how I had no idea what would happen next and that I was surprised every now and then about what people would do and what lay beneath the surface of what is considered reality.The mood and the atmosphere reminded me of Maggie Stiefvater's "Raven Cycle" and that is a great thing for me. The book surprised me in the best of ways. As I said: a book hard to categorize, but yes, if you like Maggie Stiefvater, Meredith Ann Pierce or of course Neil Gaiman's other books (especially the ones like "Coraline"), "The Ocean at the End of the Lane" totally is for you.
