Pressestimmen
“Acclaimed Spanish novelist Cercas looks deeply at the curious case of a man who wasn’t there . . . A charged examination of a surpassingly strange matter and of the masks and fictions we construct.” —Kirkus Reviews“Remarkable, fascinating . . . Cercas’s analysis of post-Franco Spain will be invaluable for any non-Spaniard trying to understand this complex period. Yet it’s not just for this that The Impostor is a great book. It is also because of the intellectual depth and even-handedness with which Cercas explores Marco’s lifelong lie and his motivations for telling it.” —Mark Nayler, El País (American edition)“Mesmerizing . . . Shines a light not only on the methods of the deceiver but the willingness of the deceived to accept such falsehoods.”—Publishers Weekly, starred reviewReviews from the UK“Cercas often presents himself on the page as a bit of a neurotic bumbler, the better to work doubts and second thoughts into his formidably polished storytelling . . . He tell[s] Marco’s story with great skill, some impressive detective work and an irony that’s sometimes amused and sometimes appalled . . . Hair-raising.” —Christopher Tayler, London Review of Books“A fascinating, highly charged, scalpel-sharp dissection of Marco’s deception, which also looks at the dilemma of the justifiable lie, and the collective lies Spain told itself as it moved from dictatorship to democracy.” —The Times (UK) “No Spanish writer has probed the unhealed wounds of the country’s history with more subtlety and rigour than Cercas . . . . The Impostor is a true story that even the most fanciful yarn-spinner would blush to invent . . . Mixing dogged research and testy, sparring interviews with the charming pretender, Cercas scrupulously tracks Marco’s big lie.” —The Economist “A humane, artistically responsible, and civilised book, one that you finish feeling heartened that such a serious-minded writer as Cercas is at work.” —The Sunday Times“Incandescent . . . Magnificent . . . In addition to an incisive journalistic investigation, Cercas’s book is a subtle essay on the nature of fiction and how it can infiltrate life and upset it . . . Marco’s illness is a disease of our time, that of a culture in which truth is less important than appearance, in which to perform is the best (perhaps the only) way of being and living. Fiction has replaced reality in the world we live in, and average characters from the real world don’t interest us. Fabricators do.” —Mario Vargas Llosa, El País“Cercas probes this mysterious and extraordinary life with uncommon patience, uncommon skill, and uncommon sympathy . . . A fascinating book.” —The Scotsman “Besides being a piece of nifty journalistic detective work, Cercas’s book is an insightful psychological study . . . Both convincing and compelling.” —The Spectator “An awful lot here resonates—not just the buzzy issues of myth-making that dominate much of contemporary politics, but more enduring questions about the nature of truth and storytelling.” —Daily Mail“Cercas’s best book to date . . . A marvelous book that readers will enjoy.” —ABC Cultural

I’m not certain why the author wrote this book, and it seems like the author isn’t sure himself. This was recommended for a book club read, and about halfway through the month, the group discarded the suggestion and we chose a different book.
This is a bit slow at times, which surprised me, given the topic. But the story of a liar whose con was Holocaust survival exposes fault lines not just in his own troubled psyche but in the collective identity of Spain. The writing at times is unbelievably good--there's this part about the myth of Narcissus and the horror and seduction of having seen one's own image that blew me away.
At over 400 pages, Cercas’ story is too long and rambling, overly personal and all but apologetic when the book’s subject, Enric Marco, an infamous, self described, “Catalan patriot,†is an attempt to define what drives a Holocaust liar to be a Holocaust liar, when the motivations are drowned out by the author’s verbosity. This may be of interest in Spain or Catalonia but it is questionable if it plays to the Amercan reader. In his other books, “Soldiers of Salamis†and “The Anatomy of the Moment,†Cercas cleverly interweaved the Spanish Civil War history in the former fictional book and post Franco history in the latter’s journalist treatment of the failed 1981 coup; here the tedium is apparent. Little excites the reader as Cercas’ mild enthusiasm to tell the tale becomes ennui.
Learn to trust your instincts, Mr. Cercas. You shouldn't have written this book. Or any other for my money.after 20 pages of reading about your marital discord, being praised by some famous Spanish author, talking and talking to your analyst, and having spirited Hamlet-like "to be or not to be" discussions with yourself, I chucked this in the recycle bin.The hype here was a book about this famous imposter nobody ever heard of. Thanks to this author, the secret remains safe.Forever.
I approached this book with an interest in the subject and high hopes. I could not have been more disappointed. Rambling, whiny, about the author more than anything, and full of endlessly repeated, incredibly irritating tortuous tripe like "what he remembers, or claims he remembers, or believes he remembers..."
